The best Shopify themes, by what they actually do

Every list here is filtered on something the Shopify Theme Store publishes: a feature it names on a theme's own page, or the price it charges. Nothing is picked by hand, and the order inside each list is the lowest satisfaction rate a theme's review count actually supports rather than the raw percentage. Short answer: Shopify themes differ enormously in what they do with colour, and not at all in one respect: none of them shows a separate set of photographs per variant, because Shopify stores one featured image against a variant. Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every variant so the gallery filters to whatever the shopper picked, on any theme on any of these lists. Free to install.

Pick the question you are actually asking

  • Shopify themes with colour swatches built in

    10 themes · from $170

Almost every Shopify theme now lists colour swatches, which makes it close to useless as a thing to choose on and very useful as a thing to understand. A theme swatch changes which variant is selected. It does not change the photographs, because Shopify only stores one image against a variant, and that catches out nearly everybody who buys a theme for its swatches.

  • Shopify themes that let shoppers filter a collection by colour

    10 themes · from $170

A swatch on a product page helps somebody who has already chosen the product. A swatch filter helps everybody else. It is the difference between a shopper scrolling two hundred products looking for the green one and a shopper clicking green, and Shopify names it as a theme feature so you can check rather than guess.

  • Shopify themes with shop the look image hotspots

    10 themes · from $170

An image hotspot turns one photograph into several products: a room, an outfit, a shelf, with a dot on each thing in it that a shopper can tap. It sells the way a catalogue sells rather than the way a grid does, and Shopify names it as a theme feature, so it is checkable rather than a claim in a theme demo.

  • The best free Shopify themes

    10 themes · 10 free

Shopify builds and maintains its own free themes and they are not crippled versions of paid ones. What they are is shorter: fewer merchandising blocks, fewer layout options, and a satisfaction score dragged down by everybody who found Shopify itself hard rather than the theme. This page ranks them on the score their review count actually supports, and says what each one is missing.

  • The best Shopify themes under $200

    10 themes · from $120

A Shopify theme licence is a one off payment rather than a subscription, and the gap between the cheapest paid theme and the most expensive is about four hundred dollars. What that money buys is not obvious, and several themes under two hundred carry longer feature lists than themes at twice the price. This page is the ones worth looking at before spending more.

How these lists are built

Shopify's half

The price, the percentage of reviews that are positive, the review count, the feature list and the theme store id all come from the theme's own page in the Shopify Theme Store. Every one of them is checkable at source in a few seconds, and each theme name links straight to it.

The ordering

Not our opinion, and not the raw percentage either. Each theme is placed on the lowest satisfaction rate its review count actually supports, so a theme at 100 per cent across twelve reviews sits below one at 96 per cent across two hundred. A big review base barely moves; a base of four collapses. That is the whole ranking, and it means a theme cannot buy its way up the page by being new.

What you will not find here

Affiliate links, sponsored placements, or a theme included because somebody paid for it. The theme links go straight to the Shopify Theme Store untagged. The only commercial interest on these pages is our own apps, which are named in one clearly marked section on each page and nowhere else.
