Rubik Variant Images Theme Compatibility

Tinker theme variant images: show only the selected variant on Shopify

April 3, 2026
Variant images in Shopify Tinker theme

Short answer: Tinker does not solve this on its own, because Shopify gives each variant a single featured image, so the gallery never narrows to the colour a shopper picked. Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every variant, so the theme shows only what the shopper selected. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 420 reviews. Tinker runs on 135 stores using it as of July 2026.

Shopify Tinker theme (ID: 3627) is part of the Horizon collection, built specifically for makers, artisans, and craft brands selling handmade goods. It gives product photography plenty of room and keeps the layout focused on the work itself. But Tinker shares the same core limitation as every other Shopify theme: one image per variant.

If you sell handmade pottery in 6 glazes with 4 photos each, selecting “Sage Green” swaps the featured image but all 24 photos stay in the gallery. A customer looking at sage has to scroll past cobalt, terracotta, matte white, and charcoal photos to find the ones that matter. For makers who put real effort into product photography, that is a poor experience.

Rubik Variant Images & Swatch includes native code for the Tinker theme. Assign multiple images per variant, filter the gallery instantly when a customer picks a color or material, and replace the default variant picker with visual swatches that fit Tinker’s handmade aesthetic.

What you get on Tinker with Rubik

  • Multiple images per variant. Assign unlimited images, videos, and 3D models to each variant. The gallery filters instantly when a customer picks a glaze, color, wood type, or material.
  • Visual swatches. Replace Tinker’s default variant picker with image thumbnails, color circles, or pill buttons. Mix swatch types per option (image swatches for Color, pills for Size).
  • AI auto-assign. One click matches product photos to the correct variants by visual similarity. Saves hours for makers with large catalogs. Learn more about AI auto-assign.
  • Common images. Process shots, packaging photos, scale references, or detail close-ups stay visible for every variant.
  • Horizon web component support. Rubik has specific detection code for Horizon collection themes. It hooks into Horizon’s variant-picker web components directly.
  • No code editing. App embed only. 100+ CSS variables for styling. Shadow DOM prevents conflicts. Theme updates safe.

Why makers and craft brands need variant images

Handmade products are not mass-produced items where a single photo per color is enough. A hand-thrown mug in “Ocean Blue” looks different from every angle because the glaze is never perfectly uniform. Customers want close-ups of the texture, the bottom stamp, the handle shape, and how the glaze pools at the base. The same applies to handmade jewelry, leather goods, woven textiles, and woodwork.

Rubik solves this by filtering the gallery to show only the selected variant’s images. Pick “Ocean Blue” and you see 4 photos of that glaze. Pick “Terracotta” and the gallery swaps instantly. If your variant images are not showing correctly, Rubik works around Shopify’s one-image-per-variant limitation entirely.

Setup (5 minutes)

  1. Install Rubik Variant Images and activate the app embed in your theme settings.
  2. The app auto-detects Tinker (ID: 3627) as a Horizon collection theme and loads the correct integration code.
  3. Open a product. Drag images onto variants, or click AI auto-assign to let the app match them automatically.
  4. Enable swatches. Pick your swatch type for each option.
  5. Save and visit the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Which app should I use for variant images on the Tinker theme?

Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, is the app we build for this and Tinker is natively supported. It holds 5.0 stars across 420 reviews and carries the Built for Shopify badge. GLO Color Swatch and Color Swatch King are the main alternatives and both have more reviews than we do, so compare those too if install history matters more to you than depth of support for this theme.

Does Rubik work with Shopify Tinker theme?

Yes. Native code for Tinker (ID: 3627) is included as part of Rubik’s Horizon collection support. Variant detection, gallery filtering, and swatch placement work automatically.

Can I show multiple images per variant on Tinker?

Not with Shopify alone. Rubik lets you assign unlimited images per variant. The gallery filters in real time. For more details, see the variant images FAQ.

Is this good for handmade product stores?

Yes. Handmade products often need more photos per variant than mass-produced items. Rubik handles unlimited images per variant, and the AI auto-assign feature saves time for large catalogs. Read the jewelry variant images guide on CraftShift for tips.

What about linking separate products on Tinker?

Use Rubik Combined Listings alongside Variant Images. Both support Tinker natively and work together on the same product page.

Will this slow down my Tinker store?

No. Metafield-based data loading. No external API calls, no impact on Core Web Vitals.

Why are my variant swatch images blank on the Showcase theme?

August 4, 2026

Showcase builds a filename out of your option value and loads that file. A capital letter, an accent or a slash breaks the match, and a missing file is not an error, so nothing tells you. Here is how to find it.

Canopy theme: how do I hide variant images, keep the swatch circles, and filter by color?

August 4, 2026

Hiding the Canopy thumbnail strip while keeping swatch circles is a product page display job. Feeding a color metafield into the filter menu is Search and Discovery work. Two jobs, two systems, and one of them no swatch app can do.
