Rubik Variant Images on Groupthought Themes: Pipeline & Story (2026)
Groupthought builds Shopify themes from Whistler, BC, Canada. They only have two themes. Two. But Pipeline alone has 208 reviews and a 98% positive rating at $360, which makes it one of the highest-rated paid themes in the entire Shopify Theme Store. Story follows at $280 with 21 reviews and 95% positive. Small studio, serious reputation.
Both themes share one frustrating limitation with every other Shopify theme: variant images. Pick “Walnut” on a product with 6 finishes and 4 photos each, and Shopify swaps the featured image but leaves all 24 photos in the gallery. The customer has to mentally filter out 20 irrelevant images. Nobody should have to do that in 2026.
Rubik Variant Images works on both Pipeline and Story with dedicated selector code for each. Assign multiple images per variant, filter the gallery on selection, and replace the default picker with image swatches, color circles, or pill buttons.

Groupthought: two themes, zero compromises
Most theme studios have 5, 8, 12 themes. Groupthought has two. That is a deliberate choice, and the review scores reflect it. Pipeline at 98% positive is almost unheard of for a $360 product. Story at 95% with a newer, smaller audience is tracking the same trajectory.
Both themes are well-coded with clean DOM structures, but (and this is important) they use custom variant picker markup that differs from Dawn. Generic variant image apps that only target Dawn selectors will either fail silently or produce glitchy behavior on Pipeline and Story. We wrote dedicated code for both.
Pipeline ($360, 208 reviews, 98%)
Pipeline is the flagship. 208 reviews, 98% positive, $360. Those numbers speak for themselves. It is popular with lifestyle brands, home goods stores, and fashion retailers who want a polished product page without a lot of visual noise.
The product gallery in Pipeline uses a specific slideshow component with custom event handlers for variant changes. When we first added Pipeline support, we had to trace through their JavaScript to understand how variant selection propagates to the gallery. Standard Shopify events fire, but Pipeline adds its own layer on top. We handle both.
What Rubik adds to Pipeline:
- Multiple images per variant. Assign 3, 8, 15 images to each color or style. Gallery filters instantly on selection. No leftover photos from other variants cluttering the view.
- Image, color, and pill swatches. Replace Pipeline’s default dropdown or radio buttons with visual swatches. Design them to match your brand using 100+ CSS variables.
- Videos and 3D models per variant. Not just images. Assign product videos or 3D model files to specific variants. The media gallery filters all types.
- Common images. Size charts, lifestyle shots, or packaging photos that should appear for every variant stay visible regardless of selection.
Pipeline stores often have high average order values. That $360 theme investment signals a brand that cares about presentation. Showing 30 unfiltered photos on a product page undermines that entire effort. Kinda defeats the purpose of buying a premium theme, doesn’t it?
Story ($280, 21 reviews, 95%)
Story is Groupthought’s second theme. Newer, fewer reviews (21), but already at 95% positive. It leans into editorial content and storytelling, with sections for brand narrative, team introductions, and content-heavy layouts.
Story’s product page is cleaner than Pipeline’s, with more whitespace and a focus on the hero image. Variant image filtering matters even more here because the gallery has so much visual weight. One mismatched image breaks the entire aesthetic.
We built the same level of support for Story as Pipeline. Auto-detection on install. Native selectors. Shadow DOM rendering for swatches. The only difference between the two themes from Rubik’s perspective is the DOM selectors, and we handle those behind the scenes.
If you are choosing between Pipeline and Story, that decision has nothing to do with variant image support. Both work equally well with Rubik.

Setting up Rubik on Pipeline or Story
Same process for both. Five minutes, zero code editing.
- Install Rubik Variant Images from the Shopify App Store.
- Open your Shopify theme editor and enable the Rubik app embed. Rubik auto-detects Pipeline or Story and loads the correct selectors.
- Open a product in the Rubik dashboard. Assign images to variants by dragging and dropping, or use AI auto-assign.
- Turn on swatches. Pick your style: image thumbnails, color dots, or pill buttons.
- Preview the product page. Done.
For large catalogs (50+ products), use bulk assign from the app dashboard. It processes products in the background using Shopify gallery order. No AI calls, no per-product clicks. Just queue it and let it run.
Why Shadow DOM matters for Groupthought themes
Both Pipeline and Story have distinctive CSS that gives them their premium look. Heavy use of custom properties, carefully tuned spacing, specific font stacks. When a variant image app injects its own swatches into the page without CSS isolation, these styles can bleed through. You end up with swatches that look wrong: wrong font, wrong spacing, wrong border radius.
Rubik renders all swatches inside Shadow DOM. The theme’s CSS stays outside. Our CSS stays inside. Zero bleed-through in either direction. You customize the swatches with Rubik’s 100+ CSS variables, and the theme never interferes.
This sounds like a small technical detail, but it is the difference between swatches that look “off” and swatches that look intentional. When you are paying $360 for Pipeline, you care about those details.
Pairing with Rubik Combined Listings
Rubik Variant Images is product page only. It does not touch collection pages. Does not show swatches there. Does not link separate products together. That is a different job entirely.
Rubik Combined Listings handles collection page swatches and product grouping. If you sell a sofa in 5 fabric colors as 5 separate products (for SEO, for inventory tracking, for better product photography), RCL groups them and shows fabric swatches on collection pages. Customers click “Linen” and land on the linen product page, where Rubik Variant Images then shows only the linen photos in the gallery.
Both apps support Pipeline and Story. Both load from metafields, no external server calls. And if you look at what stores running $360 themes actually need… it is usually both.
“Hands Down the best customer support of all the variation/swatch apps I have used till date. The app does everything. From individual variant gallery to really detailed customizable swatch’s. All in a single app. Originally we used to use two different apps so this is so much more cost efficient for us. […] The app is top notch. you can customize it how ever you feel like, The options are really good. AI has been integrated, HELPS ALOT WITH SORTING IMAGES.”

Frequently asked questions
Does Rubik work on Pipeline theme?
Yes. Rubik Variant Images has native support for Pipeline with auto-detection. Install, enable the app embed, and start assigning images. No code edits required.
Does Rubik work on Story theme?
Yes. Story is fully supported with dedicated selectors. Same setup process as Pipeline.
Why do Pipeline and Story need special support?
Groupthought themes use custom variant picker markup that differs from Shopify’s Dawn-based templates. Apps that only target Dawn selectors will not work correctly. Rubik has written specific code for Pipeline and Story to handle their unique DOM structure.
Can I assign images to multiple options on Pipeline?
Yes. If your product has Color, Size, and Material options, you can assign unique images to each combination. Rubik supports multi-option image assignment on all themes.
What is the pricing for Rubik Variant Images?
Flat pricing: Free (1 product), Starter $25/month (100 products), Advanced $50/month (1,000 products), Premium $75/month (unlimited). Not tied to your Shopify plan level.
Will updating Pipeline or Story break Rubik?
No. Rubik uses the app embed system, not theme code modifications. Theme updates do not affect the integration. If Groupthought significantly changes their variant picker structure (rare), we update our selectors to match.
Can I use Rubik Combined Listings on Pipeline too?
Yes. Both Rubik apps support Pipeline and Story. Use Rubik Combined Listings for collection page swatches and product grouping, and Rubik Variant Images for product page gallery filtering.
