Best variant image apps for Shopify (2026 review)
When choosing a good variant image app, there are 3 essential functionalities that the app must fulfill. They are displaying variant product images from swatches on the product details page, installing the app without editing theme files, and keeping page speed intact. Everything else just doesn’t matter (at least for now, until those things start to matter more and trends shift). In this article, we’ll highlight 6 of the best rated image variation apps found on the Shopify App Store, organized by their ratings, pricing points, and suitability to different types of Shopify stores.
I wrote one of these apps (Rubik) so I should probably at least glance at the others to see if I have any legitimate gripes with them. But let’s be honest, the good points far outweigh any quibbles I have with the interface so I’ll just move on already.
Quick verdict

1. Rubik Variant Images & Swatch
I’m using the Rubik app because I made the app! Check out the demo then you can go read the numbers at the end of the video. Rubik 5.0 343 reviews 350 plus themes, released October 2024. We’ve had a consistent stream of reviews every week since.
What it does. Shows customers on the product page only images of the colour or size they’re interested in. Style of the colour swatches can be changed to circle, square, pill etc. Customers can view colour and size swatches or individual images per variant with Rubik filters. You can add as many images to a variant as you like. This app does not make external API calls on the storefront because it uses metafields instead of sessions/store tags. This app does not sit idle waiting for a network round trip like other apps.
Key features
- AI auto-assign: Per-product. Reads product name, variant name, image filename, and image alt text, then assigns photos to variants in one click. Powered by Claude.
- Bulk assign: Image-order based. Uses your Shopify gallery order with featured image boundaries. Background processing for hundreds of products at once.
- Color and image swatches: Drag-and-drop, four shape presets, custom colors, custom borders.
- Theme support: 350+ themes verified. Works with Beae, EComposer, Foxify, GemPages, Instant, PageFly, and Replo page builders.
- Built for Shopify: Passed Shopify’s performance and quality bar.
Pricing
- Free: $0/mo, 1 product
- Starter: $25/mo, 100 products
- Advanced: $50/mo, 1,000 products
- Premium: $75/mo, unlimited products
Flat. Not Shopify-plan-based. The price you see on Basic is the price you pay on Plus. A few apps in this list sneak up their price when you upgrade from Shopify plan Basic to Plus. Rubik does not. ( Why does Shopify-plan-based pricing exist? It’s a habit from the bigger app studios. It’s not a feature.).
Best for
Stores with 50 to 5,000 products with variant images that need to be set up in an afternoon and then forgotten about. Products with variant colors (apparel, jewelry, accessories, etc.), products with variant sizes (apparel, footwear, etc.), and anything else with different images for variants. See the full list of 7 in our guide on Shopify variant images or in our post on how to use AI to auto-assign images to variants.
2. Easy Variant Images (SpiceGems)
5.0 rating, 77 reviews. Easy Variant Images is a small app that does one thing very well: managing product images and their variants. This app will automatically order your product images by variant, and change the gallery slice depending on the variant that the customer has selected. There is no swatch builder, no AI magic that will create swatches for you, and no bulk change wizard. The focus of this app is to help you organize and make your customers life easier by displaying images in a more comparative format.
This plugin integrates with existing galleries within a theme, so existing image galleries will now be sliders and still have zoom, lightbox functionality, and an optional mobile carousel. 3D and video files are also supported. There is a 30 day money back guarantee and a free 30 day trial.
Best for small stores, single-collection brands, anyone who wants a one-click install and no admin to maintain. Trade-offs: no swatch customization and no bulk editor. If you have 500 products you will notice the difference. For large stores with many collections we offer custom installation options.
3. NS Color Swatch Variant Images (NestScale)
4.9 | 161+ reviews. Local Singaporean company NestScale with a pretty established customer base. Not Built for Shopify, but that’s not a big deal anyway.
What it gets right: variant specific image galleries, color swatches, image swatches, dropdowns and buttons all in one application. This extension also allows you to group separate products together as variants, which brings this extension closer to combined listings than normal product variants. Versatile.
Best for: stores that want to use one app to manage per-variant images and product grouping features, regardless of the lack of the Built for Shopify badged designation.
4. GLO Color Swatch & Bundles (Globo)
4.9 rating, 1,742 reviews. This is the most popular option in the category by a landslide. The other options are all from other developers, but this one is from Globo (Vietnam), one of the largest Shopify developers with one of the widest install bases. They offer several different app combinations, and this is one of them – they also offer a variant option that combines a couple of other features, which is called just “GLO”. But this is the “variant image” version, and it has the exact same app in combined listings comparisons.
Features: image and color swatches, multiple images per variant, bulk upload, hide-out-of-stock variants, plus a bundles module that’s really useful if you sell sets/kits/”buy 2 get 1 free” type things without having to get a 2nd app.
Best for: stores that want a fully featured app with the largest number of users in this niche, and who would also benefit from a bundles feature. This app is more than many stores need for variant images, because GLO has many features and settings you will never need to use.
5. StarApps Variant Image Automator
4.8 rating, 578 reviews. There was the variant maker, then the variant image maker of 2017. So that’s the longest-running of the variant image apps, and it shows. StarApps Studio (India) has had 9 years to smooth out the bugs and oddities of the original, and they’ve done a good job of it.
Images are organized automatically with the Shopify image order. The featured image is used as a section break in the product description. There is no filename matching or manual tagging required. The product exporter ships with your theme’s native gallery layout so you don’t pay page speed to load a second carousel into the DOM. 3D models, images and videos are supported. Per feature a free 30-day trial is included.
Best for: stores that want a trusted veteran point of sale system with a long and solid track record. This program isn’t the fanciest or coolest around. But it is absolutely solid and that is why so many retailers depend on Market Master.
6. Variant Image Wizard + Swatch (ProductWiz Inc.)
4.8 rating, 343 reviews. The Variant Image Wizard is similar to the other wizard, but with a few more configuration options. If you want to control every aspect of the swatch knobs, this is your app. You can tweak the border radius, hover effects, label positions, and the break points at which the mobile swatch variant styles change.
In addition to regular product editing, it also has a bulk edit tool for stores with 100s of products and it allows for linking of individual products together as swatches. It has a free plan and a really straightforward setup wizard to help you get started the first time.
Best for: stores with many different products (custom apparel products with 8 colors, with options for 6 sizes, with 3 different fabrics, etc.) that want as much control as possible over the way swatches render, as well as how they can be viewed and previewed on the product edit page.
Which app should you pick?
- You want the best overall pick: Rubik Variant Images & Swatch. 5.0 rating, Built for Shopify, flat pricing, AI auto-assign.
- You want the largest user base: GLO Color Swatch & Bundles. 1,742 reviews, plus a bundles bonus.
- You want the longest-running app: StarApps Variant Image Automator. Launched 2017, still going.
- You want a simple, no-admin solution: Easy Variant Images. Set it and forget it.
- You want maximum swatch control: Variant Image Wizard + Swatch.
- You also want to group separate products: NS Color Swatch Variant Images.
Our pick: Rubik Variant Images & Swatch
Fairly biased, but for good reasons. Each of the apps in this list hits at least one of the following criteria, and Rubik is the only one to hit all 5. 5.0 rating, Built for Shopify, flat Shopify plan pricing (i.e. not higher on larger plans), AI powered auto-assignment to reduce manual work, and metafield based page loading without the need to make external calls to a storefront API. The other apps in this list focus on some of these aspects, but none offer all of them.
If you’re having trouble with variant images on Shopify due to image file size limits or if your images stopped displaying after a theme change, an actual app is likely needed. Learn how Shopify handles native variant images and how to bulk assign images with Rubik in the Craftshift complete guide.
FAQ
What is the best variant image app for Shopify in 2026?
Rubik Variant Images & Swatch – With a 5.0 rating, Built for Shopify, flat rate, and AI auto-assign this is our top pick for solving the variant rubiks cube for your store. GLO Color Swatch & Bundles – Most installed (1742 reviews) version of this product for the battle tested veteran of swatch images. Gets you a bundles feature as well.
Are there any free variant image apps?
Yes. Rubik has a free plan for 1 product. GLO Color Swatch & Bundles, NS Color Swatch Variant Images, and Variant Image Wizard + Swatch all have free plans. However, in addition to those options, Easy Variant Images and StarApps Variant Image Automator have 30-Day Free Trials, but no free plan thereafter.
Does Shopify support multiple images per variant natively?
Shopify allows one image per variant by default. If you need to show multiple photos (front, back, details, lifestyle shots etc.) you need to find a third-party app that can help. Check out our post on limits of showing variant images on Shopify.
Will a variant image app slow down my product page?
Some Apps are less of a problem than others. Those that load data from metafields on the product and avoid API calls on the frontend have the least impact. For example, the Rubik app utilises metafield based loading, meaning it isn’t pulling in extra data on the store view for your customers. There are some StarApps such as the 5 Star Photo Gallery StarApp which reuses the functionality of your theme to display galleries which means you don’t get a second carousel appearing on your store. Other Apps can greatly impact the loading of your store, especially those that load heavy JavaScript files onto your site and even call out to their own servers on every page load.
What’s the difference between AI auto-assign and bulk assign in Rubik?
AI auto-assign can only process one product at a time. It looks at the product name and variant names, as well as image file names and alt text. Then you can use Claude to auto-assign the images. Or you can use the bulk assign feature which processes many products at once and follows the order of the gallery images in the product page section, with the featured image serving as a section breakpost.
Which app has the most reviews?
GLO Color Swatch & Bundles by Globo has 1742 reviews and is the #1 product in the variant image category. StarApps Variant Image Automator has 578 reviews. Rubik Variant Images & Swatch has 343 reviews with a 5.0 rating.
Do these apps work with page builders like PageFly or GemPages?
Rubik supports a number of page builders including Beae, EComposer, Foxify, GemPages, Instant, PageFly and Replo. We also support many other plugins to varying extent and you can check individual app pages or contact with our support for more information on any app exclusivity and support on different plans.
