If you are setting up shopify ritual theme variant images, the first thing worth knowing is that Ritual is not a standalone theme in any way that matters here. It is one of the themes Shopify built on the Horizon architecture, which means the product page behaves the same way Horizon’s does, and every fix below applies identically to its siblings.

That is good news. It means Ritual inherits Horizon’s genuinely good native swatch system, and it also means Ritual inherits the same gap: swatches and a filtered gallery are two different features, and Ritual only ships the first one.

What Ritual is, and why the family matters

Ritual is a paid Shopify theme published by Shopify itself, carrying Theme Store ID 3625. It sits in the generation of themes built on the Horizon architecture rather than the older Dawn one, alongside Atelier, Tinker, Savor, Fabric, Dwell, Vessel, Heritage and Pitch.

For variant images this family grouping is the single most useful thing to understand, because our app resolves all ten of these themes through the same code path. Whatever you configure on Ritual behaves the same way on Savor or Dwell. If you read a guide written for Horizon, it applies to Ritual line for line. And if you switch between siblings later, your variant configuration survives the move.

Where Ritual variant images stop

Ritual’s native swatches do one job well: they turn a dropdown into colour circles. What they do not do is touch the gallery underneath.

Shopify allows exactly one featured image per variant. So on Ritual, clicking a colour jumps the gallery to that colour’s single featured image, and every other photo in the product stays in the same scroll. A jacket in five colours with four angles each is twenty images, and the shopper who wants the olive one scrolls past sixteen photos of something else.

Three limits, stated plainly:

  • One image per variant. Native Ritual cannot give a variant its own multi-image gallery. One hero shot is the ceiling.
  • No filtering. The gallery is never reduced to the selected colour, only repositioned within it.
  • Colour values only. Native swatches key off Shopify’s standard colour names, so fabric and pattern swatches, or image swatches for a print, are not available.

None of that is a flaw in Ritual specifically. It is where Shopify’s variant model ends, and it is identical on Horizon, Dawn and every other theme.

How Rubik fits the Ritual product page

Rubik Variant Images does two things on Ritual. It filters the gallery so only the selected variant’s images remain visible, and it adds a swatch layer that picks up where the native one stops, including image swatches, custom shapes and richer selected states.

The mechanism matters if you care about speed. The variant-to-image mapping is stored in Shopify metafields and ships inline with the page, so the storefront makes no external API call to render a filtered gallery. Ritual’s own load performance is left intact, and Shopify’s full-page cache still works because nothing is fetched at runtime. Styles are rendered inside a Shadow DOM, so Ritual’s CSS cannot leak into the swatches and vice versa.

Installation is a theme app embed plus a block. Nothing in Ritual’s Liquid files is edited, which is why a theme update cannot break the setup.

Setup steps for Ritual

1. Install the app

Add Rubik Variant Images to your store. The free plan covers one product, which is enough to see the gallery filter working on Ritual before you commit anything.

2. Turn on the app embed

Open Ritual in the theme editor, go to App embeds in the left sidebar, toggle on Rubik Variant Images, and save. This is what loads the filter and swatch styles across your product pages.

3. Assign images to variants

Open a product in the Rubik dashboard and pick a method. Drag and drop gives you full manual control. AI auto-assign reads the product name, variant name, image filename and alt text to match images to option values one product at a time. Bulk assign works through your whole catalogue instead, grouping images by Shopify’s gallery order using featured images as boundaries, with no AI involved. 4. Check the storefront

Open the product on Ritual and click between variants. The gallery should narrow to the images you assigned. If it does not, jump to the troubleshooting section below.

5. Decide about swatches

You can keep Ritual’s native swatches and use Rubik only for gallery filtering, which many merchants do, or hide the native picker and use the Rubik swatch block if you need image swatches, custom shapes or two-colour swatches.

Collection page swatches on Ritual

Ritual also supports swatches on product cards, so a shopper browsing a collection can see the available colours and switch the card image without opening the product. This is off by default; you enable it under the swatch settings, and it is worth knowing that card support is narrower across the theme catalogue than product page support. Ritual has it.

One behaviour surprises people, so it is better said upfront: if you hide option values that have no images on the product page, those values can still appear on collection cards. That is deliberate, not a bug. The card is a browsing surface and hiding options there would misrepresent what the product offers.

What the Ritual install base looks like

Ritual runs on 64 stores using Rubik Variant Images as of July 2026. That makes it a mid-sized theme in our data, well behind the two giants but comfortably ahead of the long tail.

The family context is more useful than the single number. Horizon itself accounts for 2,080 stores and Dawn for 1,962, while the Horizon family together, Ritual included, comes to roughly 2,855. Why that matters to you: a theme with a small individual count is not a theme with thin support. Ritual shares its integration with the most-used theme on the platform, so it receives the same fixes at the same time.

Troubleshooting on Ritual

  • Swatches do not appear at all. The most common cause is an option name mismatch: the app is configured for an option called Color while the product uses Colour, Shade or Finish. The browser console prints both the product’s real option names and the configured ones, which usually ends the investigation in seconds.
  • Gallery does not filter. Confirm the app embed is enabled in the Ritual theme editor and that images are actually assigned for that product, not just uploaded.
  • You suspect a conflict with another app. Add ?stop_rubik=true to the product URL. That disables our widget for that page load only, so you can see whether the behaviour is ours. ?debug=true prints a detailed log instead.
  • Images changed after re-upload. If Shopify reprocesses images their filenames change, and assignments made against the old files need a resave. The product status report flags this.
