Variant images in Shopify Tinker theme
Shopify Tinker theme (ID: 3627) is part of the Horizon collection, built specifically for makers, artisans, and craft brands selling handmade goods. It gives product photography plenty of room and keeps the layout focused on the work itself. But Tinker shares the same core limitation as every other Shopify theme: one image per variant.
If you sell handmade pottery in 6 glazes with 4 photos each, selecting “Sage Green” swaps the featured image but all 24 photos stay in the gallery. A customer looking at sage has to scroll past cobalt, terracotta, matte white, and charcoal photos to find the ones that matter. For makers who put real effort into product photography, that is a poor experience.
Rubik Variant Images & Swatch includes native code for the Tinker theme. Assign multiple images per variant, filter the gallery instantly when a customer picks a color or material, and replace the default variant picker with visual swatches that fit Tinker’s handmade aesthetic.

What you get on Tinker with Rubik
- Multiple images per variant. Assign unlimited images, videos, and 3D models to each variant. The gallery filters instantly when a customer picks a glaze, color, wood type, or material.
- Visual swatches. Replace Tinker’s default variant picker with image thumbnails, color circles, or pill buttons. Mix swatch types per option (image swatches for Color, pills for Size).
- AI auto-assign. One click matches product photos to the correct variants by visual similarity. Saves hours for makers with large catalogs. Learn more about AI auto-assign.
- Common images. Process shots, packaging photos, scale references, or detail close-ups stay visible for every variant.
- Horizon web component support. Rubik has specific detection code for Horizon collection themes. It hooks into Horizon’s variant-picker web components directly.
- No code editing. App embed only. 100+ CSS variables for styling. Shadow DOM prevents conflicts. Theme updates safe.
Why makers and craft brands need variant images
Handmade products are not mass-produced items where a single photo per color is enough. A hand-thrown mug in “Ocean Blue” looks different from every angle because the glaze is never perfectly uniform. Customers want close-ups of the texture, the bottom stamp, the handle shape, and how the glaze pools at the base. The same applies to handmade jewelry, leather goods, woven textiles, and woodwork.
Rubik solves this by filtering the gallery to show only the selected variant’s images. Pick “Ocean Blue” and you see 4 photos of that glaze. Pick “Terracotta” and the gallery swaps instantly. If your variant images are not showing correctly, Rubik works around Shopify’s one-image-per-variant limitation entirely.
