Rubik Variant Images Guides

Best Shopify apps for stores with a lot of color variants (2026)

July 29, 2026
Best Shopify apps for stores with a lot of color variants (2026)

Short answer: Shopify allows one featured image per variant, so a product with 24 colorways still shows all 24 colors to every shopper. Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every color so the gallery filters down to one. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews.

This post is not about stores with three colors. Three is fine. Shopify handles three.

It is about the catalog shape where one product carries ten, twenty, sometimes thirty colorways: a hoodie in 22 colors, a paint range, a yarn line, a phone case in every finish the supplier prints. That shape breaks four things at once, and no single feature fixes all four. The gallery fills with images nobody asked for. The swatch row wraps into a wall. Sold out colors sit there looking clickable. And assigning the photos by hand becomes a weekend job that you get to repeat every time a new colorway lands.

So the question is not “which swatch app looks nicest”. It is which app survives 30 options on one product without the merchant hand-editing anything. Those are different questions, and most comparison posts answer the first one.

Ownership disclosure: Craftshift builds Rubik Variant Images, one of the apps below. It sits inside the list and inside the table, flagged as ours every time, and we say plainly where a competitor is the better pick. The order is not our opinion either: apps are listed by App Store review count, largest first, read off each listing on 29 July 2026. That puts us fifth of seven. Review count is the one number on these pages nobody can argue with, which is exactly why we used it instead of writing a ranking that happened to start with us.

What actually breaks at 10 to 30 colors

Four separate failures, and they compound.

Gallery bloat. Shopify’s native model gives a variant exactly one featured image. Everything else lives in one shared pile. At 22 colors with four shots each you have 88 images in a single carousel, and a shopper who wants the sage green one is scrolling past 84 photos of something else. Native image limits per variant are not the constraint here. The filtering is.

Swatch wall. Thirty circles in a row is not a picker, it is wallpaper. Layout controls stop being decoration at this count and start being the difference between a usable page and a bounce. We wrote up the specific fixes in handling too many color swatches in one row.

Sold out colors. With three variants a greyed swatch is honest. With 30, a shopper hits four dead ones before finding stock and leaves. Hiding versus striking through versus greying is a real decision, covered in hiding sold out variant swatches.

Assignment labor. This is the one merchants underestimate. Twenty two colors times four images is 88 drag operations on ONE product. Multiply by 300 products. Doing that by hand is realistic for a dozen SKUs and delusional past a hundred, which is why Rubik Variant Images can assign whole galleries in bulk from your existing image order, or per product with AI. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, and the free plan covers one product so you can test the logic before paying anything. Run your numbers through the variant image calculator first if you want the real total.

The seven apps, side by side

Ratings, review counts, launch dates and prices were read off each App Store listing on 29 July 2026. All seven carry the Built for Shopify badge.

Every app, what it does and where it stops

1. Color Swatch King: Variants

2,740 reviews at 5.0, live since July 2019. Nobody in this category has a track record like that, and pretending otherwise would be silly. The listing covers variant image swatches, color swatches, collection page swatches, price and stock badges on options, and sold out handling, which maps neatly onto three of our four failure modes. Where it stops: pricing follows your Shopify plan rather than your catalog, so a Plus store on a small catalog pays $99.90 while a Basic store with 4,000 products pays $14.90. Whether that is good or bad depends entirely on which side of that trade you sit.

2. GLO Color Swatch Variant Image

Globo’s swatch app carries 5.0 across 1,665 reviews and has been live since March 2021. Free tier includes color swatches and hiding out of stock options, which is unusually generous. Image swatches and the extra display styles start at Silver, $9.90. Gold at $19.90 adds unlimited product groups and bundles. Where it stops: it is a wide app rather than a deep one. Bundles, swatches and grouping in one install is convenient until you want fine control over which images a specific color shows.

3. OP Color Swatch Variant Images

OPTIS gathered 773 reviews at 5.0 in about a year, which is a genuinely fast start. It combines swatches, per variant images and combined listings in a single app. Where it stops: the free tier is only for trial, partner, pause and staff stores. A live store starts at $11.90 on Basic and climbs to $99.90 on Plus. There is no way to try it on a real storefront without paying, which matters when you are testing behaviour at 30 options.

4. SA Variant Image Automator

The veteran: July 2017, 4.8 across 673 reviews, same developer as Color Swatch King. It solves exactly one of our four problems and solves it well. Organise images in the Shopify gallery in variant order and it groups them automatically, keeping your theme’s native gallery layout intact. The listing is about image grouping and says nothing about swatches, which is consistent: StarApps sells the swatch layer as a separate product, Color Swatch King. Where it stops: if you also want swatches and sold out handling you are installing a second app, which is how stores end up with two apps fighting over the same picker.

5. Rubik Variant Images & Swatch (ours)

Ours: 5.0 across 410 reviews, live since October 2024. We built it for this exact catalog shape. Multiple images, videos and 3D models per variant instead of Shopify’s one. Three swatch types you can mix per option. Sold out swatches hidden or marked. Product card swatches on collection pages for that product’s own variants, off by default. And two assignment paths that matter at 30 colors: bulk assign, which reads your existing Shopify gallery order and processes hundreds of products in the background with no AI involved, and AI auto assign, which works one product at a time using the title, option values, filename, alt text and the image itself.

Where it is the wrong pick: we have 410 reviews against Color Swatch King’s 2,740 and we launched six years later. If longest track record is your deciding factor, that is a real argument and we are not going to talk you out of it. Our entry paid tier is also $25 flat, well above the $4.99 and $7.50 entry points below. Flat pricing wins on a big catalog and loses on a small one. And if you need to link separate products rather than variants of one product, this is the wrong app entirely: that is grouping separate products into one listing, a different job.

“An essential app for anyone with several products with different colour variants. The support from Farid was quick and effective, and he even helped us fix something on our website (unrelated to the Rubik app) that he noticed wasn’t working properly.”

Anonymous merchant, October 2025, Rubik Variant Images on the Shopify App Store

6. Variant Image Wizard + Swatch

ProductWiz sits at 4.7 across 210 reviews, live since May 2020. The cheapest real paid tier in this list at $4.99, and the swatch configurator is genuinely detailed. Where it stops: the free plan covers five products and only Shopify’s own free themes. Bulk edit, grouping products as swatches, videos and models, and support for any non free theme all sit behind the $7.99 Pro tier. Read the plan table before you install, because “free plan available” and “free plan that fits a 30 color catalog” are not the same sentence.

7. Easy Variant Images

Spice Gems holds 5.0 across 60 reviews, live since December 2019. It attaches multiple images per variant and switches the gallery when the variant changes. Videos and 3D models included on every tier. That is the whole product, and there is something to be said for an app that refuses to grow features. Where it stops: no free plan at all, only a 21 day trial, and the listing advertises no swatch layer, so your picker stays whatever your theme ships. Plans are keyed to your Shopify plan too, $7.50 for Basic through $19.50 for Plus.

How to choose in about a minute

Forget feature lists. Answer one question: what is the biggest number in your catalog?

  • Under 30 products with color variants, and you mostly want the gallery to behave: Easy Variant Images or SA Variant Image Automator. Neither adds a swatch layer, both are cheap, both are old enough to be boring in the good way.
  • You want swatches, badges and collection page display in one install and you are on a small Shopify plan: Color Swatch King or GLO. Plan based pricing is in your favour there.
  • Hundreds of products, 10 to 30 colors each, and the assignment work is the actual problem: Rubik Variant Images. Bulk assign from gallery order plus per product AI is the only combination in this list aimed squarely at that, and flat pricing means a 4,000 product catalog on Shopify Plus does not get taxed for being on Plus.
  • Your colors are already separate products, not variants: none of these. You need separate color products linked to look like variants instead.

One opinion, and it is not a popular one: review count is a terrible proxy for fit here. An app with 2,740 reviews earned most of them from stores with four colors, because most stores have four colors. Your 24 color catalog is a minority case, and the honest test is not the star rating, it is installing two apps on the free plan and watching what a 24 swatch row does on a phone.

You can see the multi image behaviour running on a live storefront in the Rubik demo store, check your theme against the supported themes list, or preview swatch shapes with our free swatch preview tool. If you are still deciding whether variants or separate products is the right structure, the separate products vs variants calculator on craftshift.com settles it faster than another blog post will.

FAQ

Which app should I use for a product with 20 or more colors?

Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, if the assignment work is what hurts. It gives every color its own image set, hides sold out swatches, and assigns galleries in bulk from your existing Shopify image order across hundreds of products at once. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, flat pricing from $25 a month. If you want the longest track record instead, Color Swatch King: Variants has 5.0 across 2,740 reviews and has been live since 2019.

How many color swatches is too many on one product page?

There is no hard limit, but past roughly 12 swatches on mobile the row wraps into a block that reads as decoration rather than a control. Smaller swatch sizes, a scrollable row, or grouping by color family all help. The failure is visual, not technical.

Can Shopify show a different set of images for each color without an app?

Not natively. Shopify assigns one featured image per variant. Some themes filter the gallery by the variant’s assigned image, but no theme gives one color its own multi image set. That gap is why this category of app exists at all.

Should sold out colors be hidden or greyed out?

Grey them out under about eight options, hide them above that. At 30 options a shopper who clicks three dead swatches in a row assumes the whole product is gone. Check the listing before you buy: the two image only apps here, SA Variant Image Automator and Easy Variant Images, advertise no swatch layer, so that behaviour comes from your theme rather than the app.

Do variant image apps slow down the product page?

They can, if the app fetches its data from an external server after the page loads. Rubik stores assignments in Shopify metafields and makes no external API calls, so the data arrives with the page. Ask any app you are testing where its data lives before you judge it on a speed score.

Is flat pricing or Shopify plan based pricing cheaper?

It depends on the mismatch between your plan and your catalog. Plan based apps in this list run $5 to $99.90 a month. A Basic store with 3,000 products pays very little; a Plus store with 200 products pays the most in the category. Flat pricing, like Rubik’s $25 to $75, ignores your plan and charges on product count instead.
