Rubik Variant Images vs Variant Image Wizard
Rubik Variant Images and Variant Image Wizard both show multiple images per variant on Shopify product pages. Pick a color, see only the photos for that color. Same core idea, different execution.
Rubik launched in 2024 with AI-powered image assignment, Shadow DOM swatch isolation, and 350+ theme support. Variant Image Wizard has been in the Shopify App Store since 2019 with a lower starting price and simpler feature set. This post covers every difference so you can pick the right app.

What Rubik Variant Images does
Rubik gives you three ways to assign images to variants. The first is AI auto-assign. Click one button and Claude AI analyzes each product image using 4 data points: product name, variant name/value, image filename, and image alt text. A photo named “blue-hoodie-front.jpg” goes to the Blue variant automatically. One click per product, no manual dragging.
The second method is bulk assign. Arrange your product images sequentially by variant in Shopify’s media gallery, and Rubik detects variant boundaries using image-order based grouping. It runs across hundreds of products in one background operation. The third method is manual assignment for full control.
On the storefront side, Rubik renders color swatches inside a Shadow DOM, preventing CSS conflicts between swatch styles and your theme. The app supports 350+ themes with 8 variant detection methods, works with 7 page builders (GemPages, PageFly, EComposer, Beae, Instant, Foxify, Replo), and includes ARIA labels, keyboard navigation, and a swatch click event API. Image data is stored in Shopify metafields, so the storefront loads without external API calls.
What Variant Image Wizard does
Variant Image Wizard lets you assign multiple images to individual Shopify variants. When a customer selects a variant, the product gallery filters to show only the matching images. The app has been available since around 2019, giving it one of the longer track records in this category. It carries a 4.6 rating across 218 reviews on the Shopify App Store.
The listing highlights multiple images per variant, variant-based image filtering, color swatches, and bulk image assignment. Reviews mention that it handles the basics well with a simple interface. The listing does not mention AI features, Shadow DOM isolation, page builder support, or accessibility. That does not mean the app lacks those capabilities. It means the information is not on their App Store page.
Pricing comparison
Rubik pricing (flat, based on product count)
| Plan | Price | Products | AI images/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 | 50 |
| Starter | $25/mo ($200/yr) | 100 | 500 |
| Advanced | $50/mo ($400/yr) | 1,000 | 5,000 |
| Premium | $75/mo ($600/yr) | Unlimited | 50,000 |
Your Shopify plan does not affect the price. A store on Shopify Plus pays the same $25/month as a store on Basic Shopify.
Variant Image Wizard pricing (feature-based tiers)
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| Free | $0 (limited) |
| Pro | $9.99/mo |
| Premium | $14.99/mo |
At the entry paid level, Variant Image Wizard costs $9.99 versus Rubik’s $25. That is a $15.01 difference per month. The price gap is real. The question is whether the features Rubik adds are worth the higher cost. AI auto-assign can save hours of manual work on stores with 100+ products. Shadow DOM eliminates CSS conflicts that would otherwise require developer time to debug. If you spend 3 hours manually assigning images that AI could handle in 10 minutes, the monthly difference pays for itself fast.
Where Rubik is stronger
AI auto-assign
Rubik uses Claude AI to analyze product images and match them to the correct variant using 4 data points. No other variant image app in the Shopify App Store offers this. Variant Image Wizard does not mention AI features on their listing. For stores with dozens or hundreds of products, the time savings are substantial. Read more about how AI auto-assign works.
Shadow DOM swatch isolation
Rubik renders swatches inside a Shadow DOM. Your theme’s CSS cannot interfere with swatch styles, and swatch styles cannot break your theme. This eliminates visual bugs that plague other swatch implementations. Variant Image Wizard does not mention Shadow DOM on their listing. Learn more about adding color swatches with Rubik.
350+ themes and 7 page builders
Rubik supports 350+ Shopify themes with 8 variant detection methods and 7 page builders. Variant Image Wizard does not specify a theme count or mention page builder support. When a variant image app does not support your theme, the gallery filtering breaks. Read more: how to show only selected variant images.
Built for Shopify badge. Rubik has it. Shopify reviewed the app for quality, performance, and security before granting it. Variant Image Wizard does not have this badge.
Accessibility. Rubik includes ARIA labels, keyboard navigation, and focus indicators for WCAG compliance. Variant Image Wizard does not mention accessibility features on their listing.
Higher rating. Rubik holds a 5.0 rating across 343+ reviews. Variant Image Wizard has a 4.6 across 218 reviews. Both are solid, but the gap suggests more consistent positive experiences with Rubik.
Where Variant Image Wizard is stronger
Lower price. At $9.99/month for the Pro plan, Variant Image Wizard costs less than half of Rubik’s $25/month Starter plan. If your store has a tight app budget and you do not need AI assignment or Shadow DOM, the price difference is meaningful.
Longer track record. Variant Image Wizard has been in the Shopify App Store since around 2019. That is roughly five years longer than Rubik. More time in production means more edge cases encountered and more merchant feedback incorporated.
Simpler interface. Variant Image Wizard focuses on core variant image functionality without AI settings, Shadow DOM configuration, or swatch event APIs. For merchants who want a straightforward tool, fewer options can be an advantage.

“Not mentioned on their listing” means the feature is not listed on the app’s Shopify App Store page. The app may still support it.
Which app should you choose?
Choose Rubik if your store has more than a handful of products. AI auto-assign handles the tedious work of matching images to variants. The 350+ theme support with Shadow DOM isolation means fewer compatibility problems. And if you use a page builder, Rubik is the clear choice since Variant Image Wizard does not mention page builder support.
Choose Variant Image Wizard if budget is your top priority and your catalog is small. At $9.99/month, it is the cheaper option for stores that do not need AI, Shadow DOM, or extensive theme coverage. The app has been around since 2019 and handles the basics well.
For most stores that take product photography seriously, Rubik is the stronger long-term investment. You can start with the free plan and test every feature on one product before committing. See the live demo store to try it yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Rubik Variant Images or Variant Image Wizard?
Rubik is better for stores that need AI-powered image assignment, broad theme compatibility (350+ themes), Shadow DOM swatch isolation, and accessibility features. Variant Image Wizard is better for stores on a tight budget that only need basic variant image filtering and do not require AI or advanced swatch functionality.
Does Variant Image Wizard have AI image assignment?
Not mentioned on their listing. Rubik is the only variant image app that uses Claude AI to analyze product photos and assign them to variants automatically using 4 data points.
Can I switch from Variant Image Wizard to Rubik?
